Robjn - The thing about sex... Robjn tops 6ft 6inches in his big boots and thick socks! He's one of the main men behind an all new web site called CBGAY.COM. He likes to hang out at Teri-Aki where they serve good, honest and cheap food! "Do you have a condom in your wallet?" If you're young, straight or gay, you go out to meet someone, sometimes for love, sometimes for sex, and then, if you're still in the same bed in the morning, you can think about longer term relationship plans. If you're shaking your head now, I suggest you're either out of touch, or very reserved.
The one thing that sets gay people out from straights is the clubs, and, as I mentioned, there's a club for most sexual preferences (in the big cities, of course!). So, what would this mean when you get to a small town like Cambridge? Well, one of the nice things about the pubs here is that they're full of different types of people, mostly the same people, but they are all from a different fame of life and have different preferences. Gay sex is a strange thing, if you're on the gay scene, where you can expect to have sex with someone one night and then get into your taxi home, and not see them for a week or so. This shouldn't sound too different from the straight scene, but case to case examples change. One of my straight friends, she and her pick up for the night ended up using a phone box to make their extra special call, [think of Blondie; Hanging on the telephone] so you can see, one night stands and public sex is not something that's just exclusive to gay people. Everyone is having a go. Cambridge has an interesting mix of straight and gay right now; we have gay pubs that are serving food in the day and welcoming straight families, and in the night it's gay as normal and straight-friendly too, so the night life is now rather mixed. Straight people have integrated well with the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender groups. I think this is good as long as everyone is intelligent enough to integrate. In most of the cases it does work rather well. I'm not sure what this trend corresponds to, is it: Will & Grace? 6 Feet Under? Queer as Folk? Coronation Street or the Bisexual ideal defined in the 1990's, and that its fashionable to be diverse. The test, of course, is how does a straight man react to two gay men kissing? Well, to be honest, I think they deal with it better than the women... in my personal experience. So, what is gay life now? Well, in Cambridge it is very mixed and getting bigger all the time. Nearing the end, I would like to say...when a person... say, one of your friends, has a condom in their wallet or bag, please, please do not make a disparaging comments, be bold and comment on it in a positive way, congratulate them for it, that they're being safe, and they will have less chance of sexual disease. Do you have a condom in your wallet? If no, I suggest you get two, and pack them in right now, gay or straight, male or female, think of it as a safe self promotion. You can get them from Boots, Family Planning Clinics and if your gay, charities like DHIVerse.
